ParaHub Documentation

Install ParaHub, then learn each tab — with the common tasks written out step by step.

ParaHub opens from the BIMHIVE ribbon tab in Revit 2024, in the Parameters panel. The window is modeless, so it stays open while you select elements and keep working in the model. Every tab stages its changes first and only writes to the model when you click Apply.

Installation

You need Revit 2024. Close Revit before you start. 1. Download ParaHub from the marketplace and run the installer. 2. Start Revit. The first time, Revit asks whether to load ParaHub — choose Always Load. 3. Open the BIMHIVE tab on the ribbon. ParaHub is in the Parameters panel. To remove it, uninstall ParaHub from Windows Apps & Features and restart Revit.

Getting Started

Open a project, then click ParaHub on the BIMHIVE tab. The window stays open while you work — you can select elements in the model without closing it. Every parameter in your project is listed in one grid. Search by name, sort by clicking a column header, filter using the small arrow on each header, or click into the grid and start typing to jump to a parameter. The rhythm is the same everywhere in ParaHub: 1. Make your changes. They appear as pending rows, marked so you can see what's new, edited or set for deletion. 2. Look them over. Nothing has touched your model yet. 3. Click Apply. Everything goes in at once, as a single undo — so one Ctrl+Z takes it all back out. The five tabs: Parameters — create, rename, duplicate and delete project parameters. Categories — choose which categories each parameter applies to. Transfer — copy parameters from one family into other families. Families — add new parameters to many families at once. Shared Editor — tidy up and manage your shared parameter file.

Creating and Editing Parameters

On the Parameters tab: Add a parameter — click Add Parameter. A new row appears with a starter name you can type over. Set the Discipline, Type of Parameter, Group Under, and whether it's Instance or Type. Rename one — click the name and edit it. Duplicate one — right-click the row and choose Duplicate. You get a copy named "X Copy", ready to edit. Delete one — right-click and choose Delete. If the parameter is already in use, ParaHub tells you how many elements have it before you confirm. Built-in Revit parameters can't be deleted. Do several at once — tick the rows you want and use Batch Actions. Shift-click selects a range, the same as in Windows Explorer. Show more columns — the Additional Attributes menu adds columns for Visibility, User Modifiable, Description, Hide When No Value, Group and GUID. You can set these on a new parameter; on one that already exists they're shown for reference only. When everything looks right, click Apply. What you can change on a parameter that already exists: its name, and the group it's filed under. Its data type and its Instance/Type setting are fixed once the parameter has been created — that's Revit, not ParaHub. If you need a different data type, create a new parameter.

Assigning Categories

A parameter only shows up on the elements whose categories it's assigned to. The Categories tab is where you set that. For one parameter, click the Categories button on its row. For several, tick the rows and click Assign Categories. In the picker you can search by category name, hide the ones you haven't ticked, show sub-categories, and select or clear everything at once. Each category shows its discipline, so it's easy to find the ones you want. Important: the picker replaces that row's categories with exactly what you've ticked. If a parameter is already assigned to Walls and you want to add Doors, tick both — ticking only Doors will drop Walls. Two shortcuts worth knowing: Presets — save a set of categories under a name and load it again later, including in other projects. Handy for the combinations your office uses repeatedly. Drag and drop — drag one row's Categories cell onto another row to copy the whole set across. Category changes are staged like everything else, and go in when you click Apply.

Working with Families

Two tabs add parameters to families that are loaded in your project. In both cases the parameter goes into the family itself, so every type in that family gets it — it does not appear in your project's parameter list. Add new parameters to several families (Families tab) 1. Tick the families you want. Search by name or filter by category to find them. 2. Build your list of parameters: Add Parameter for one at a time, or Import from Excel or Import Shared Parameters to bring in a set. 3. Click Apply. ParaHub works through the families one by one and shows you a report of what happened to each. Two things to expect: once you've added your first parameter, the family ticks lock so your list can't drift onto a different set of families — clear the parameters or click Apply to unlock them. And if you tick exactly one family, the Value column shows what that family currently has for each parameter. Copy parameters from one family to others (Transfer tab) 1. Choose the source family from the list, or click Pick and select one in the model. 2. Tick the parameters you want to copy. 3. Tick the families to copy them into. A family can't copy to itself. 4. Click Apply. The footer tells you exactly what's about to happen before it runs. If one family fails, the rest still go through — the report tells you which one and why.

Managing Your Shared Parameter File

The Shared Editor tab opens a shared parameter file and shows every parameter in it, in one searchable list, with the group each belongs to. Working with files — Load SP File opens any file for editing without changing which file Revit is currently using. New File creates an empty one. Set as Active for this Project points Revit at the open file. Save a Copy As writes it out somewhere else. Editing parameters — right-click any row, or tick several and use Batch Actions: Rename — including bulk renaming with a prefix, suffix or find-and-replace, with a preview of the new names before you commit. Duplicate — makes a genuine new parameter, not a second reference to the same one. Generate New GUID — gives the parameter a fresh identity. Move to Group — files it under a different group. Delete — removes it from the file. You can also edit Name, Description, User Modifiable, Visibility and Hide When No Value straight in the grid. Groups — the Groups button adds and renames groups. A group that still has parameters in it can't be deleted; move or delete those first. Combining files — Merge Files puts two or more files together. Anything that doesn't match cleanly is listed for you to decide on, and the result is always written to a new file, so your original files are never changed. Before a big clean-up, keep a copy of your shared parameter file. These edits are made to the file itself.

Excel, Imports and Reports

Export to Excel — writes out exactly what you can see: the columns currently shown, and only the rows left after your filters. Useful for sharing a parameter list or editing it outside Revit. Import from Excel — reads your spreadsheet back in. Columns are matched by their header names, so you can reorder them or leave some out; only a Parameter Name column is essential. Blank rows are ignored. Before anything is added, you get a review screen showing what ParaHub found: New — doesn't exist yet, will be created. Identical — already exists exactly as-is, nothing to do. Conflicting — same name, but something differs. The differences are listed. Ambiguous — the name matches more than one existing parameter, so you'll need to sort it out by hand. Nothing is staged until you confirm. On a conflicting row you can update the Group Under; other differences can't be applied to a parameter that already exists, so create a new one instead. Import from a shared parameter file — same idea, with a tick-list of what's in the file. Where two parameters share an identity but their details differ, ParaHub flags it and asks you rather than guessing. Checking what's actually used — Analyze Usage on a single parameter tells you how many elements have it and how many have a value filled in. Run Usage Audit does the same sweep across the whole project and lists the parameters nothing ever fills in — useful before a clean-up. It reads a lot of the model, so run it when you need it rather than leaving it on.

Troubleshooting

I can't find ParaHub on the ribbon. Revit asks once, on the first start after installing, whether to load the add-in — you have to choose Always Load. If you picked something else, restart Revit and try again. ParaHub sits on the BIMHIVE tab, in the Parameters panel. I can't change a parameter's data type, or switch it between Instance and Type. Revit fixes both when the parameter is created and gives no way to change them afterwards, so ParaHub doesn't offer it. Create a new parameter with the settings you want. Categories went missing after I assigned some. The category picker replaces what was there with exactly what's ticked. Open it again and tick everything the parameter should apply to, including what it had before. The family checkboxes won't respond. They lock once you've staged your first parameter on the Families tab, so your list can't drift onto a different set of families halfway through. Clear the staged parameters, or click Apply, and they unlock. Most of my batch applied, but not all of it. Each row and each family is handled separately, so one problem doesn't stop the rest. The report at the end lists exactly what didn't go through and why. Some options are unavailable. Creating, editing and deleting parameters need a project open. With a family open on its own, ParaHub still lets you look through and search parameters, but not change them. The Families and Transfer tabs work on families loaded into a project, not on a family you're editing in its own window. Still stuck?
